It's winter here and my hair is extremely dry. How do I make my hair silky and smooth again without going to extreme lengths? Thanks. How do you make dry hair silky and smooth again?
Don't run out to a salon and get it all cut off immediately! I used to make that mistake and my hair never got any longer than my shoulders! Most hairdressers will just chop it off as they want you to come back regularly so they get paid. Plus, most aren't trained to deal specifically with long hair. If you can't find a long hair specialist, then try the following... (this is what i do and i now have silky, unsplit hair past my waist)
Every weekend cover all the hair lower than your ears in xtra v olive oil (it may smell, but its great!) warm it up a bit before applying and really coat the ends of your hair. Then wrap your hair (a plastic shower cap is good) and leave overnight. Rinse well the next day.
Eat enough meat, fish, eggs and bananas and yet more olive oil (tastes great with balsamic vinegar and crust white bread) and take a multi vitamin if needed. Obviously fruit and veg too!
Avoid lots of caffeine, smoking, alcohol, etc - all the things that are bad for you anyway! Your hair will look healthier if your body is!
NEVER EVER EVER brush/comb wet hair. Finger comb it or use a wide tooth seamless comb if absolutely necessary (ie. if you have thick curls) and keep dry brushing to a minimum. Treat your hair like fine silk and brush/comb slowly and carefully.
Keep it tied up/back during the day or if going out and cover it up in very windy/cold or sunny weather.
Never blow dry, colour, perm, straighten or heat-curl your hair as every time you will damage it a bit more.
Find some good products that work with your hair type. My hair strands are silky and thin, but there are a lot of them. I use Bedhead chocolate hair repair once a week and Bedhead health goddess (a vitamin spray) nearly every day. I vary between pantene and sunsilk shampoo/conditioners depending on time of year. Test a few out and find ones that suit you.
The above should minimise the splits, but if there are some left and you do need to trim them, make sure the scissors are very very sharp and keep your hair in one layer if possible.
When tying it up, use soft material covered bands (I mainly use silk ones) and don't pull it back too tight. Hair sticks are also great if you have long hair and want to try something different. They take a bit of practice to use, but look cool if your going out or have it up for work.
If you do a lot of swimming or sunbathing then try spraying the ends with jojoba or coconut oil before tying it back to protect it.
Hope that helps a bit. Keeping long hair in good condition takes a bit of work (although far less than when I had it cut short!), but with anything that takes effort, the results are worth it! Good luck : )How do you make dry hair silky and smooth again?
I have a lot of problems with my hair being dry and/or frizzy year round. I found some haircare products that really work though. It's the Sunsilk shampoo, conditioner, and 24/7 creme. I can't think of the exact name of it, but it's the green bottles. And I also use a leave in moisturizer from Suave, orange bottle, gray spout....
I've also heard washing your hair in mayonaisse works, although I've never tried it.
Dove.
its a lavender shampoo %26amp; conditioner called Damaged.
then, when your in the shower, leave your conditioner in for 7
minutes.
then, when you rinse it and come out, wait until your hairs damp. then place Biolage Leave in Conditioner on the tips and barely on your scalp. only use a penny amount.
this'll make your hair silky, smooth, and vibrant any time of year.
Try hot oil treatments a couple times a week. I live in Alaska and have the same problem.
cheap at home ways to do this are either pouring a can of beer over your hair in the shower (I swear it works) Or use some mayonaise as a mask for your hair and then shampoo. You could also try an avocado mask
Dont go out and buy anything expensive.
First: Purchase a mild Shampoo (To Clarify hair, I will explain why)
Second: TRIM your hair ends (May 1 1/2 to 2 inches)
Third: Here's the magic part: Mix olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and a ';little'; honey, (honey u will have to heat so it can blend). Either leave on ALL day or all night (if all nite, DONT use honey)
Use a teaspoon of every oil and honey,.... a little more if ur hair is long or a little less if ur hair is short
Repeat this 3-4 times a week, your hair will grow like a weed, fortify, reconstruct, moisturize, soften %26amp; remove all frizz I promise,..... and it will be super shiny!!!!
The clairifying shampoo will help take the oil off your hair when u shower
You can also use a conditioner but get a light conditioner that wont wiegh ur hair down, becuz u can over condition, I use herbl essences ';clean happy'; conditioner.
When I do this at nite, I wake up, shampoo %26amp; condition, rinse and style as usual. Has worked for years
You can find olive oil anywere, but the other oils you will have to buy at a local organics store, wholes foods or BJ's health corner.

use olive oil--even tho it's oil it washes out easily. The best way to do it is, when you are going to be busy at home for a few hours---wash your hair(you don't want styling products to block effectiveness)-- put the olive oil in it and on your scalp, cover it in plastic and get busy. When you are busy enough to work up a sweat, heat leaves your body from the crown of your head so it naturally heats the treatment. After a couple of hours, when it's time to get ready to go out---rinse your hair first, then shampoo and condition like you normally would. Good to do once a week or every 2 weeks. Olive oil is also great for your skin--after your shower and dry, still damp tho---put it all over you. If there is excess tap it off with a towel. You won't smell like olive oil. You won't feel greasy it soaks in.
use deep conditioning.
what you do is keep it in over night and wash it out in the morning.. totally works.
lots of moisturizing shampoos/conditioners/treatments
what i found and have used and still used and will always use is this professional line called PureOlogy. they're 100% Vegan, carcinogen-free, protects against UVA and UVB rays, and doesnt fade hair color.
their purple bottles is the hydrating line. comes with shampoo, conditioner, and treatment. it's a little more costly than the other professional products, but you'll love it.
with the right shampoo and you should also try straightening your hair to make it smooth!
good luck!
ok try mashing an avocado and massaging it into ur scalp and then waiting about an hour or 2 then washing it out also try massaging ur scalp w/ warm olive oil and leaving it on for 30 minutes then washing it out and do it like once or twice a week it will help!!! also try putting egg or mayo in ur hair but that stuff smells gross but works verry well so u can try it i guess
believe it or not but MAYONAISE (sp) anyway but it works. cover your hair withit and then put a plastic bag or some plastic wrap over hair for at least 30 minutes. it also kills lice. gross but yeah. it works. i also put lotion in my hair at night and shower it out in the morning.
